Wasps

A stinging insect that you’ll see especially during the warmer months around yards, parks, patios, and garbage.

What Wasps Are
Wasps close-up
  • Wasps are slender-bodied insects (often black/yellow or black/white) with a narrow “waist” and the ability to sting multiple times.
  • They differ from bees (which are fuzzier and typically sting only once) and can be more aggressive, especially in late summer and early fall when colonies are large and seeking food.
  • Wasps play a role in the ecosystem by preying on other insects (helping control pests) and some even act as pollinators, though most people notice them for buzzing around food and drinks.
Wasp nest example
  • Many wasps build paper-like nests by chewing wood fibers and mixing them with saliva, creating the layered structure you often see under roofs, soffits, decks, trees, or wall voids.
  • Some species live in large colonies with a queen and workers, while others are solitary and build much smaller nests.
  • If a nest is located near an entryway, roofline, patio, or children’s play area, it can quickly become a safety concern because wasps may defend it aggressively when disturbed.
Common Types in GTA Area
  • Yellowjackets – social wasps that often invade picnics or garbage, aggressive around food late in the season.
  • Paper wasps – build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves or in gardens.
  • Hornets & Bald-faced Hornets – larger and more defensive, with large paper nests in trees or attics.
  • Mud daubers and other solitary wasps – less aggressive and often hunting spiders or insects.
When You See Them
  • Wasps are seasonal. In Toronto, they become noticeable in spring and summer, peaking in late summer into early fall as colonies mature and food becomes scarce.
  • They’re attracted to sweet drinks, meats, garbage, and food scents — which is why you often see them at BBQs and outdoor patios.
Safety tip: Wasps can sting multiple times. People with allergies can be at risk of serious reactions, so it’s best to avoid disturbing nests.
