Termites

This page covers the key signs of termites, how to tell termites apart from ants, and the type of damage termites can cause. (Content taken from your Termite presentation.)

1. Key Signs of Termites

Use these signs to identify possible termite activity.

Visible Damage to Wooden Structures
1.1. Visible Damage to Wooden Structures
What to Look For:
  • Termites feed on wood, leaving behind visible signs of damage such as hollowed-out wood, thin tunnels, and chewed edges.
Mud Tubes or Tunnels
1.2. Mud Tubes or Tunnels
What to Look For:
  • Termites build mud tubes to travel between their nests and food sources. These tubes are usually found along walls, foundation areas, or any wooden structures.
  • Color: The tubes are typically brown or grayish and are about the width of a pencil.
Swarming
1.3. Swarming
What to Look For:
  • Termite swarming happens during mating season, often in the spring or summer. You may see flying termites near windows, doors, or light sources.
  • What They Look Like: These termites have two pairs of wings of equal size and are typically black or brown.
Ants Versus Termites
Physical Appearance - Ants
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE — Ants
  • Body Structure: Ants have a distinct “waist” or “pinched” body between the thorax and abdomen.
  • Antennas: Antennae are bent or “elbowed.”
  • Wings: Winged ants (during mating season) have two pairs of wings, with the front wings longer than the back wings.
  • Size: Ants vary in size, but most are smaller than termites, typically ranging from 1/8 to 1 inch long.
Physical Appearance - Termites
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE — Termites
  • Body Structure: Termites have a straight body with no visible waist. Their body is more cylindrical.
  • Antennas: Termites have straight, bead-like antennae.
  • Wings: Winged termites also have two pairs of wings, but their wings are of equal size. When flying, their wings are much longer in proportion to their bodies than those of ants.
  • Size: Termites are usually slightly larger than ants, ranging from 1/4 to 1 inch in length.
Damage

How damage differs between ants and termites.

ANTS

Ants generally do not cause structural damage to buildings but may invade homes, looking for food. Some species, like carpenter ants, can cause damage to wood, but it is not as severe as termite damage.

TERMITES

Termites are known for their destructive power. They feed on wood and can severely damage structures, furniture, and foundations if left untreated.
